Victoria Heryet

'I see the world through a frame. I am drawn to an image by the qualities of its light and composition. Each image lends itself to a particular medium.
In acrylic I find the mysteries hidden in shadows. Clues are revealed in pools of light. The sharpness of neon is a particular challenge - there is a subtle glow of colour cast on all the surrounding surfaces. I achieve a diffused light or a rich texture by layering thin washes of colour.
In watercolour I prefer to render the subject with bright colours, contrast and fine detail.
Throughout my work I endeavour to show a human element. I want my paintings to raise questions with the viewer. The images raise many questions for me and as I work my imagination takes me to a place within the painting.'

Victoria Heryet was born in Yorkshire, England and moved to Canada as a teenager. She received her Diploma in Graphic Design from the Kootenay School of Art. After several years of working as a graphic artist for newspapers and magazines her interests turned to painting and illustration. Victoria's illustrations for children's books have been published in Japan and her work has been accepted and won awards in juried shows in Canada and internationally.
